Carpentry Seniors Hard at Work
January 24, 2017
The fall of 2016 proved to be a busy time for the Bullard-Havens Carpentry Department. We took on two outside production jobs, one in Stratford and the other in Monroe, Connecticut. The Stratford project was rebuilding a dilapidated front porch (32’ x 8’), and construct a new deck on the back of the home (10’ x 10’). The Monroe project was to demo an existing deck and construct a new one in its place. The Carpentry students began by learning the processes for starting a new residential construction project; submitting for permits, blue print analysis, developing material/ equipment lists, etc. While working on site, the students learned proper techniques in disassembling framed structures, and layout for footing and form work as dictated by the municipal building code. Each project had elements of structural framing for which students practiced measuring, cutting, and installing of framing components. The Carpenters also learned about the application of finished elements such as composite decking and vinyl rail systems. From this, they gained a deeper understanding of how the outside element impacts composite materials and its effects on the installation process. Jobsite safety was implemented throughout these projects and the students furthered their knowledge and understanding of individual, small group, and whole class tasks. The instructors are very proud of the students and all they learned and were able to accomplish this fall, and we look forward to future production jobs this spring. Great work, “We Are Carpentry!”
