Two Juniors Receive Youth Service Award

March 18, 2017

On Saturday, March 18th at Oronoque Country Club, the Greater Bridgeport Chapter of the National Council of Negro Women recognized two Bullard Havens Technical High School students with the Youth Service Award.  Anya Jackson, a Graphics Technology student and Prince Daley, a Culinary Arts student were recognized as outstanding community youth who serve as examples to their peers due to their academic excellence and their volunteerism within their community.  This is the first time that any technical high school student has received this award since the Greater Bridgeport NCNW was chartered in 1959.  The national NCNW has been in existence since 1935.

Anya and Prince were both awarded with citations from the CT General Assembly, the City of Bridgeport, Senator Blumenthal, and Senator Himes.

In their acceptance speeches, both students thanked God, their families, their teachers, Bullard Havens, and the NCNW for their awards.  Their speeches were very thoughtful, moving, and completely written by them.  There were almost 200 people who attended the event, many of whom were civil rights activists and founding members of the NCNW (or the children/family of founding members)—all attendees were extremely impressed with the maturity and poise of both Prince and Anya.  They were very impressed with Bullard-Havens in general and commented specifically about how prepared both of these students appeared for leadership in the community.  These community leaders will now assist Prince and Anya to network to find internships and more opportunities “to shine” within the community as they approach college and/or career after graduation next year.
